Canada scraps billions in tariffs on US imports as it extends olive branch to Trump

Prime Minister Mark Carney is scrapping Canada’s punishing tariffs on billions of dollars worth of American products in hopes of making trade peace with the Trump administration.

Carney will announce the sweeping policy shift Friday after a cabinet meeting, removing 25% tariffs on a vast range of US consumer goods that comply with the North American trade agreement, Bloomberg News reported.

The move represents a stunning about-face for Canada, which had been one of the few countries to aggressively punch back against President Donald Trump’s protectionist agenda.

The tariff rollback will spare American-made products like orange juice, wine, clothing and motorcycles from the steep import taxes that have been in place since March.

The relief applies to roughly $21.7 billion worth of US goods, sources in the know told Bloomberg News.

But Carney isn’t completely backing down. Canada will maintain its 25% tariffs on US steel, aluminum and automobiles — sectors where Trump has imposed his own punitive levies.

The dramatic policy reversal comes just one day after Carney and Trump spoke by phone, marking their first publicly acknowledged conversation in weeks.

Sources say the move is designed to ease tensions with the White House while positioning Canada for the upcoming review of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement expected to begin in coming months.

The shift marks a sharp departure from the combative approach Carney championed during his successful election campaign, when he promised to inflict “maximum pain” on the US through aggressive retaliation.

That tough-guy rhetoric helped propel Carney to victory over former Pierre Poilievre, the Conservative Party leader, in the recent election.

Trudeau’s government first imposed the retaliatory measures in March, targeting about $21.6 billion in US shipments. A second wave followed Trump’s steel and aluminum tariffs, hitting US metals products and consumer goods worth another $21.6 billion annually.

Carney escalated the trade war further during his campaign, slapping tariffs on US-manufactured vehicles in response to Trump’s automotive levies.

But as prime minister, Carney has taken a markedly different approach than his predecessor, showing growing skepticism about the effectiveness of tit-for-tat trade measures.

His finance minister began carving out exemptions in April, allowing businesses to import certain US items tariff-free.

Automakers like General Motors and Stellantis were offered potential relief by Ottawa if they maintained Canadian manufacturing and investment.

When Trump doubled steel and aluminum tariffs to 50%, Carney threatened retaliation but never followed through.

Canada also declined to respond when the White House hiked its “fentanyl tariffs” on Canadian goods to 35% from 25% on Aug. 1.

The restrained response reflects economic realities that may have influenced Carney’s calculation.

Bank of Nova Scotia economists estimate the effective US tariff rate on Canadian goods remains below 7%, thanks partly to USMCA exemptions that shield many Canadian exports.

Meanwhile, Canada’s retaliatory tariffs haven’t triggered the inflation surge some economists feared.

Statistics Canada, the government-run agency that crunches the numbers on economic data, reported consumer prices rose just 1.7% in July from a year earlier, well below the central bank’s 2% target.

The policy reversal has irritated both Trump and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, who viewed Canada’s swift retaliation as particularly galling compared to other trading partners’ more measured responses.

“We welcome this move by Canada, which is long overdue,” a White House official told The Post. “We look forward to continuing our discussions with Canada on the Administration’s trade and national security concerns.”

SF mob assaults ICE agents, keffiyeh-clad perp charged for threatening to ‘stab’ officer, hurt family

A mob of rioters ambushed Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in San Francisco, with one knife-wielding, keffiyeh-clad agitator threatening to “stab” one of the feds and “go after” his family, according to a criminal complaint filed Thursday.

Adrian Guerrero was charged with assaulting an officer and destruction of property over the alleged Wednesday attack on ICE officers in the Enforcement Removal Operations division, federal prosecutors said.

“I’m going to f–k you up,” Guerrero seethed while allegedly wielding a black knife and wearing what appeared to be a black-and-white checkered keffiyeh headscarf and orange-tinted goggles, according to photos in the complaint filed by the Department of Homeland Security.

He also screamed that he was “going to go after your family” and “going to stab you,” during the melee on Montgomery Street in San Francisco.

Earlier that morning, Guerrero also allegedly slashed a tire on a white Chevrolet with DHS and official government markings. He was later arrested.

The knife-wielding menace was among a crowd of around 15 anti-ICE rioters who used pepper spray and socked officers in the ambush, DHS reps revealed Friday.

US Federal Protective Services and members of the San Francisco Police Department later appeared to clear the area of the mob, in coordination with ICE officers.

“Our brave ICE law enforcement are now facing a 1,000% increase in assaults against them as they risk their lives to arrest the worst of the worst criminal illegal aliens,” Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said in a statement.

These acts of violence are fueled by sanctuary politicians’ rhetoric vilifying our law enforcement,” he added. “We will not and have not let this violence stop us or slow us down.

“Everyday our law enforcement continues to enforce the law and arrest the most depraved criminals including pedophiles, terrorists, murderers, gang members, and sexual predators.”

The charges for the anti-ICE rioter come amid a spate of similar armed assaults on the feds enforcing President Trump’s immigration crackdown.

In July, at least ten armed assailants descended on an ICE detention center near Dallas wearing military-style gear and tactical vests and opened fire on federal agents and a local cop.

All of the suspects were later charged with attempted murder.

NEW Documents Expose Multi-Front Effort To Protect Clintons While Framing Trump

by Peter Schweizer & Seamus Bruner of The Drill Down

Newly unearthed documents show deep state government actors once again circling the wagons to protect Bill and Hillary Clinton — and suppressing evidence that implicated them. Last week it was the FBI, this week it is the IRS.

In 2019, the IRS Criminal Investigations Division quietly launched a probe into the Clinton Foundation's tax practices, working closely with whistleblowers John Moynihan and Larry Doyle, financial experts who had compiled thousands of pages of evidence.

According to internal agency memos reported by Just the News, IRS agents reviewed the evidence and at least one agent concluded it meant that the "entire [Clinton Foundation] enterprise is a fraud." Agents then moved to treat the whistleblowers as cooperating witnesses and even set up secure computer servers to hold the material they had collected.

Then, without warning, the lights went out. "Can't talk about the CF," agents told the whistleblowers. By the summer of 2019, their inquiry was dead. Moynihan and Doyle are now battling the agency in Tax Court over the apparent shutdown of the investigation.

The IRS's abrupt reversal follows an earlier, more infamous patternIn 2016, FBI field offices in New York, Washington, and Little Rock all opened probes into the Bill and Hillary Clinton Foundation, partly on the strength of Peter Schweizer's 2015 bestselling book, Clinton Cash, which exposed numerous examples of the Clintons using the foundation while she served as Secretary of State under President Barack Obama as a pay-to-play scheme for business and foreign government interests seeking political influence.

The book told the story of Uranium One, a US mining company that was sold to the Russians after investors pledged more than $100 million to the Clinton Foundation. That story was confirmed in a front-page story by the New York Times when the book was published and based on its material.

The FBI field office investigations were proceeding until they were ordered by higher-ups to stop. Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates ordered prosecutors to "shut it down." Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe required his personal approval for every investigative step — effectively choking the cases.

The fallout from Clinton Cash was real. Clinton staffers scrambled for advance copies of the book, while Hillary's own pollsters flagged the Uranium One deal as her campaign's biggest vulnerability in the early primary states. By January 2016, the FBI was looking into the book's allegations — until the brakes were pulled.

Appearing on an OANN program this week, Schweizer told host Matt Gaetz that the government's double standard is unmistakable. "At the same time, they are killing an organic investigation into Clinton corruption… they were also creating a completely fictional investigation tying [Donald] Trump to Russia," he said.

Five FBI field offices had been involved before being shut down, including a satellite office in Africa. Schweizer called the saga proof of a new kind of corruption — "offshored, globalized corruption," complete with political dynasties selling access and foreign oligarchs buying influence.

The contrast between the scuttled investigation of the Clinton Foundation and the "Crossfire Hurricane" investigation into the Trump campaign's purported ties to Russia is glaring. While the Clinton probes were heavily throttled, the FBI raced to open a full investigation into Trump's campaign on the flimsiest of tips — a conversation in a London wine bar — green-lighting it within three days. Clinton's Russia vulnerabilities were turned into Trump's burden, projected onto his campaign in a haze of innuendo.

Put together, the picture is damning: an IRS that dropped the ball in 2019, and an FBI and DOJ that throttled their own field offices in 2016. The whistleblowers are still pressing their case, six years later.

But the old memos are now re-surfacing, and the "deep state" may yet face a reckoning from what may prove the largest political scandal of modern times.
