US Bank Regulators Ease Post-Crisis Curbs on Leveraged Loans
US bank regulators are easing Obama-era rules that curbed leveraged lending amid rapid growth in the private credit industry and complaints by bankers that they’re being sidelined by too much regulation.
The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. said in a statement on Friday that the 2013 guidance was “overly restrictive” and “overly broad.” The move resulted in a significant drop in leveraged lending market share by regulated banks and pushed much of that lending to nonbanks, the regulators said.
'Hollywood Writers Says Warner Bros. Takeover ‘Must Be Blocked’'
Hollywood writers, producers, directors and theater owners voiced skepticism over Netflix Inc.’s proposed $82.7 billion takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery Inc.’s studio and streaming businesses, saying it threatens to undermine their interests.
The Writers Guild of America, which announced in October it would oppose any sale of Warner Bros., reiterated that view on Friday, saying the purchase by Netflix “must be blocked.”
Anthropic CEO seeks reset with Trump administration
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei (pictured) held meetings with Trump administration officials and bipartisan senators to discuss AI governance, export rules and a shared priority on Thursday, Semafor said on Friday, citing company sources. An Anthropic spokesperson told the media that the meeting aimed to ease recent tensions.
Anthropic's push for strict safety standards has set it apart from competitors and drawn criticism from officials who argue the approach could slow the country's edge over China. Amodei has also opposed efforts to block state-level AI legislation, while AI Czar David Sacks recently accused the company of pursuing a regulatory strategy driven by "fear-mongering."
The spokesperson said the conversations were "productive and substantive," noting "there's clear bipartisan interest in ensuring American leadership in AI."

US consumer confidence improves in December
The Consumer Sentiment Index in the United States improved by 4.5% in December compared to the previous month, and reached 53.3, coming in above analysts' expectations, a preliminary report posted by the University of Michigan revealed on Friday. The figure declined by 28% on an annual level.
The Current Economic Conditions Index slipped by 0.8% on a monthly basis to stand at 50.7 in December, dropping by 32.5% year-on-year. Meanwhile, the Index of Consumer Expectations jumped by 7.8% compared to November, and fell by 25% compared to December 2024 to reach 55.
"After four months of sharp increases to start 2025, long-run expectations fell for three consecutive months through July, followed by three more months of small increases. Long-run expectations softened over the past two months. The December preliminary reading is well below peaks in monthly readings from June 2022 and April 2025, but above most 2024 readings as well as readings from 2020 and earlier," the university stated in the report.

Bolsonaro backs his son as candidate for 2026 election
Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro stated that he would back his oldest son, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro (pictured), in the 2026 presidential contest, CNN Brasil reported Friday. The report was later verified by a member of his party.
According to CNN Brasil, which cited anonymous sources close to the Bolsonaro family, the right-wing politician told his son of this choice while visiting federal police offices in Brasilia, where he is currently serving a sentence for organizing a coup.
"Confirmed. Flavio told me that our Captain ratified his candidacy," Valdemar Costa Neto, the head of the former president's Liberal Party, said in a text message. "Bolsonaro has spoken, it's settled. We're in this together."

Trump awarded FIFA Peace Prize
United States President Donald Trump was awarded the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize ahead of the draw for the FIFA World Cup 2026 set to take place in Washington DC.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino said the prize, which will be awarded annually, was given to Trump for his "exceptional and extraordinary actions to promote peace around the world." In his speech upon receiving the honor, Trump said his administration saved "millions of lives" and praised Infantino for his "incredible job" in organizing the World Cup.
Ahead of the ceremony, Trump stated that he believes he settled eight wars, but insisted he was not interested in winning prizes, but saving lives.
