Hantavirus symptoms detected in California superspreader hot spot

An inmate at California’s notorious San Quentin prison has exhibited hantavirus symptoms, sparking concerns of a potential outbreak in a superspreader environment.

Hantavirus drew a significant amount of public attention after an outbreak infected several American citizens on the MV Hondius cruise ship traveling around the world.

The prison, located in Marin County, is still awaiting federal and state testing results to determine if the 38-year-old male inmate has hantavirus, ABC 7 reported.

There have yet to be any confirmed cases of hantavirus at the prison, officials said.

“The health and safety of the incarcerated population and staff remain CDCR’s top priority,” a California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation spokesperson told the San Francisco Chronicle.

The prison, officially known as the San Quentin Rehabilitation Center, houses more than 3,000 inmates.

The facility where the sick prisoner was housed has been disinfected, and medical staff will monitor inmates and staff for symptoms indicative of possible exposure.

Officials at the prison believe the inmate’s sickness was not caused by person-to-person contact and no quarantine has been announced.

A prison official did not know whether the inmate was still being treated at the medical unit or had been returned to his regular housing facility, ABC 7 reported.

Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome is a rare but severe respiratory illness that can start with flu-like symptoms, sometimes including stomach problems, before rapidly progressing to life-threatening respiratory distress.

The fatality rate is about 30% to 40%, and there is no antiviral treatment, according to the the California Department of Public Health. Severe cases usually require aggressive critical care.

Four Californians exposed to the cruise ship outbreak were being monitored by the state for infection last month. Two of the them have already returned home and are being monitored by local public health officials.

The other two were transported by federal authorities to a secure medical facility in Nebraska and are expected to return to California once health assessments are complete and safety arrangements are in place.

Blakeman pledges to stop solar development on upstate farmland, Hochul’s ‘solar scam’

GOP candidate for governor Bruce Blakeman is launching an ad campaign attacking Gov. Kathy Hochul over the expansion of upstate solar farms.

"Kathy Hochul’s solar sprawl is cannibalizing our state’s most precious resource: our farmland,” the Blakeman campaign wrote in a statement claiming that New York lost 500 farms in 2024 and 2025, comprising 100,000 "acres of land."

"We cannot sit by while Hochul allows the best soil in our state to be bulldozed for corporate profit and solar panels that don’t solve the state’s energy crisis,” Blakeman claimed calling New York’s efforts to increase solar generating capacity a “solar scam.”

Blakeman has hinged part of his campaign on a pledge to cut New Yorkers’ utility bills by half as electricity and natural gas rates are set to soar across large swaths of the state in the coming years.

Problem-plagued NJ Transit will use 600-person boats to ferry World Cup fans in case of meltdown

Commuters could be up a creek — yet again!

The problem-plagued New Jersey Transit system is readying two massive boats to ferry World Cup fans across the Hudson River to games in case of a meltdown on the rails, officials said.

The transportation agency — which normally only runs trains and buses — is turning to the Dunkirk-style backup plan with two 600-person vessels, New Jersey Transit CEO Kris Kolluri said at a press conference Wednesday evening.

In the event of a fire or electrical disaster, throngs of soccer fans leaving MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford Saturday can board the boats in Weehawken and sail to the Big Apple, a New Jersey Transit official told The Post.

The boat service, however, won’t be offered from New York City to New Jersey on the way to the game, he said.

“We’re going to need a bigger boat,” Kolluri recalled telling a top aide, echoing a famous movie line, after a recent fire at Penn Station, according to Politico.

“[We ordered] two boats at Weehawken with a capacity of about 600 people a boat in case again there’s a failure on the Amtrak corridor,” Kolluri said at the press conference.

The “contingency plan” comes after the beleaguered agency sparked outrage for initially charging a sky-high price of $150 for rides to the much-anticipated sporting event, then lowered it to $98.

It also comes as commuters have been frustrated in recent weeks by stallouts in the tunnel from Penn Station to New Jersey, including when a fire broke out at the major transit hub late last month.

Kolluri on Wednesday shifted blame to Amtrak, citing the national railroad system as the main reason for needing backup boats.

“It is no secret that the last couple weeks have been pretty rough on the Amtrak system,” he said. “They are the single point of failure if something were to happen on the system.”

“Without Amtrak, we will not be able to execute a proper plan for FIFA,” Kolluri said.

Problems at Penn Station and on the dozens of miles of track surrounding it have frustrated New Jersey commuters for months, with frequent service delays, last-minute cancellations and mechanical failure.

The problems could become a transit disaster on a world stage as soccer fans from all over the planet descend on the Big Apple for the World Cup match at MetLife Stadium in which Brazil will face off against Morocco on Saturday.

France and Senegal play at 3 p.m. Tuesday at MetLife and more games are scheduled at the East Rutherford complex through July.

Mullin says he could ‘clean up’ NYC in 30 days with NYPD partnership, Mamdani standing in the way

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said Thursday that his department could fix New York City's migrant crime problem in one month — if Mayor Zohran Mamdani lets him.

"If we had partnership with NYPD, we can clean that city up in 30 days," Mullin said at a news conference Thursday.

Mullin criticized the "radical socialist" for being "anti-law enforcement" and "handcuffing" the NYPD from being able to do its job.

"It's shameful because NYPD is awesome," he told reporters.

"They're phenomenal to work with. They have the best crowd procedures. They have the best law enforcement agency. I'd put them up against just about any city around the country."

Mullin added: "Hopefully the people of New York will, you know, will wise up and get a true leader in there in a few years."

"President Trump loves New York City. He loves the Knicks, too, obviously," he also said, "and the fact that the way the mayor treated him once he left the Oval Office, will tell you what type of man he is."

'“Are they done counting yet?” Pratt'

Spencer Pratt made a pointed comment about the LA mayoral race results as he has yet to concede or contest the outcome.

“Are they done counting yet?” Pratt wrote in a comment on X.

The former reality TV star has not yet directly addressed his loss to left-wing Councilwoman Nithya Raman, who defeated Pratt and will now face incumbent Mayor Karen Bass in the November runoff.

Pratt, who was endorsed by President Donald Trump, overperformed on election night, leading the Democratic Socialists of America-backed candidate by at least eight points.

However, he soon began to lose his lead as more mail-in ballots, which tend to favor Democrats, were counted.

Raman has since built a sizable lead of more than 40,000 votes over Pratt, one week after the election. Since the race was called, Pratt has made only two other public comments.

In one post, he shared an image of a duck shortly after his hopes of becoming Los Angeles mayor came crashing down.

The cryptic message was of a lone duck floating on calm water at sunset as outrage over the election result erupted around him.

Pratt entered the race after his Southern California home burned down last year. “Sitting duck,” one person commented.

“Like water off a duck’s back,” another wrote, adding a folded-hands emoji.

Pratt has not publicly explained the meaning behind the sunset duck post, but it arrived as supporters continued to debate the result and the future of his unlikely political campaign.

His other post came after he fired back at Jimmy Kimmel, who roasted him for being defeated in the Los Angeles mayoral race.

During his monologue Tuesday night, the late-night host mocked claims that the election was “rigged” and referenced Pratt’s previous comments that he would leave the city if he lost.

“I know things might be tight right now, especially with the out-of-state donation money running out,” Kimmel said.

“Moving is expensive, so to help you out we rented you a U-Haul. Our staff spent the whole day decorating for you, and everybody will notice you and wave goodbye as you leave.”

Pratt responded Wednesday morning in what was only the second time he had spoken publicly since the election results were called, posting a video of his destroyed Pacific Palisades home.

“Jimmy Kimmel, I guess you missed the part of the story. I don’t need a U-Haul … I have nothing left to pack,” he wrote.

Since Pratt lost his bid for Los Angeles mayor, numerous theories alleging election fraud and voter fraud have circulated online, including claims amplified by President Donald Trump.

However, election officials, including the county Registrar’s Office and the California Secretary of State’s Office, have repeatedly rejected those allegations.
