Putin: Nuclear arms must safeguard Russia's sovereignty

Russian President Vladimir Putin stated on Thursday that the nuclear triad must serve as a guarantor of the sovereignty of both Russia and Belarus. His comments come as the two countries are holding three-day nuclear drills.

Putin argued that the "growing tensions in the world and the emergence of new threats and risks" necessitate the use of nuclear force as strategic deterrence. Moscow will seek to leverage its arsenal to maintain "nuclear parity and the balance of power at the global level," the Russian leader added, as quoted by Belarusian Telegraph Agency (BelTA).

Meanwhile, Putin's Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko said his country is "not going to fight anyone" unless "bothered." Previously, Ukraine claimed Russia was planning an attack from Belarus' territory, warning Minsk of consequences in case of military intervention.

Airbus, Air France found guilty in deadly 2009 crash

The Paris Court of Appeal found on Thursday that Airbus SE and Air France-KLM SA are guilty of manslaughter by negligence in the 2009 crash that killed all 228 passengers and crew. The companies were ordered to pay €225,000 each, the maximum fine for the charges.

The crash happened on June 1, 2009, when the Air France Airbus A330 plane fell into the Atlantic Ocean on its way from Rio de Janeiro to Paris. An investigation determined that the crash was caused by a variety of technical issues and the crew's inadequate reaction, partly due to a lack of training.

Airbus stock fell by 3.07% following the ruling, while Air France-KLM lost 1.28%.
