Health authorities in the Chilean port city of Valparaiso denied authorization for medical operations aboard the Chinese hospital ship Silk Road Ark on Friday after a technical and legal review found it lacked the required sanitary clearance. Officials said that "following a rigorous technical-legal analysis … authorization for this health operation is not appropriate."
The decision comes after US State Secretary Marco Rubio announced visa sanctions to three government officials, claiming they "carried out activities that compromised critical telecommunications infrastructure and eroded regional security in our hemisphere", linking them to a proposed China–Chile submarine cable. Two Chinese firms have sought approval to lay a subsea cable connecting Chile and Hong Kong, according to the foreign minister.
The vessel, part of the medical mission launched in September 2025, has 14 clinical departments and advanced diagnostic equipment. Chilean authorities had already approved the mission last year.
