Tax and Spend
So the Mamdani budget for New York City at $127 billion exceeds the budget for the state of Florida ($116 billion) which has 3 times as many people and yet people are moving to Florida for a better quality of life.
So the answer is to get a mayor who will put efficiency back in the city not to raise property or other taxes by 10 per cent as such a tax jolt will kick off yet another round of departures from New York while Florida shows that it can be done. And to compare apples to apples the New York State budget last year was $254 billion. So it’s not about insufficient taxes but spending that far exceeds what could be accomplished with good government. (Miami Dade budget is on 13 billion).
New York City has been there before, teetering on bankruptcy in the 1970s until fiscal sanity was restored and when then happened the city took off as a great place to live. And yet here we are again back at tax and spend oblivion.
