The Iranian parliament is considering a bill that would impose fees and taxes for vessels seeking safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, Iran's ISNA reported on Thursday.
"We are pursuing a plan in the parliament, according to which, if the Strait of Hormuz is used as a safe route for ship traffic, energy transit, and food security, countries will be obligated to pay duties and taxes to the Islamic Republic of Iran," an Iranian lawmaker told the news agency.
Iran has effectively blocked this critical maritime route since the beginning of the US-Israeli attacks on Iranian territory, disrupting oil shipments and pushing oil prices through the roof.
