At least 14 people were killed, and 38 were injured in a bomb explosion on the Pan-American Highway in the Cauca province in western Colombia, the local Governor Octavio Guzman said. The authorities qualified the blast as a terrorist attack.
"Likewise, we are witnessing a very serious impact on the department's road infrastructure, especially along the Pan-American Highway," Guzman wrote on X. The country's leadership blamed the deadly attack on the remnants of the FARC guerrilla army, which had been disbanded but remained active in the area.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro blamed the attack on Ivan Mordisco, a rebel leader suspected of drug trafficking. The incident marks another instance of violence ahead of the presidential election set for the end of May.
