US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Wednesday that claims Iran could gain $14 billion from temporary US sanctions relief are “a myth,” defending Washington’s decision to allow some Iranian oil already at sea to reach markets.
Bessent said the Treasury was able to unlock more than 250 million barrels “on the water” through sanctions relief and argued oil prices would have been higher without the move.
