An Iran-origin influence operation used artificial intelligence and fake journalist personas to place almost 100 articles in about a dozen online outlets around the world, OpenAI said Thursday.
The operation used seven fake journalist personas to pitch long-form articles focused on the US-Iran conflict to small and medium-sized online outlets, according to a blog post published by OpenAI.
The company said it banned ChatGPT accounts used by the operation, including accounts that prompted the model in Persian to refine articles and editorial pitches and generate batches of social media comments.
After articles were published, the operators also used ChatGPT to generate comments designed to appear as reactions from social media users, according to OpenAI.
OpenAI said the activity appeared consistent with a commercial actor running a for-hire influence campaign but that it could not identify the particular actor involved.
