Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian called on Iranians to reduce energy consumption, saying a 10% cut could eliminate the country’s need for energy imports as Tehran faces mounting economic pressure.
“If we can control consumption somewhat, we will not need anything,” Pezeshkian told a meeting of senior police commanders on Thursday. “With just a 10% reduction in consumption, a significant amount will be saved and we will no longer need to import energy.”
He said expanding a government-backed car-free day initiative nationwide could save about 10 million liters of fuel a day.
Pezeshkian described economic pressure on Iran as harder to confront than military conflict, saying, “Military war is visible, but economic war is not visible and is far harder and heavier.”
He also warned that disruptions to production could deepen public dissatisfaction, saying the government would prioritize keeping energy supplies flowing to industry even if that required cuts to government offices.
