US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced additional sanctions against the International Criminal Court (ICC) on Friday, banning transactions with the body, "cutting off resources and crippling their ability to operate" over its potential prosecution of American troops, border agents and political leaders.
In a video message on X, Rubio said President Donald Trump would not allow the court to prosecute Americans, calling it a "rogue court" and a "threat" to US sovereignty. He warned that Washington would "continue its campaign to dismantle the ICC piece by piece" unless it stopped threatening Americans, adding: "Either the ICC will end its threats or we will end the ICC." Rubio also urged US allies that belong to the court to "rein it in."
The Trump administration announced the sanctions hours after South African jurist Navanethem Navi Pillay, a former ICC judge, won the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. Trump has repeatedly argued that he deserves the award for his role in international diplomacy.
