Driver who rammed car into Temple Israel synagogue, preschool dead after police response, shots fired

 The person who intentionally rammed their car into a school entrance at a Jewish synagogue in Michigan is dead following a massive police response and reports of shots being fired.

Police swarmed a Jewish synagogue in Michigan following reports of an “active shooter” on Thursday after a car is believed to have intentionally crashed into the building, sources told The Post.

The crash sparked a fire as authorities swarmed Temple Israel in West Bloomfield just before 1 p.m., law enforcement sources said.

Witnesses reported hearing gunshots immediately after, according to WDIV.

It wasn’t immediately clear if the driver or cops fired the apparent shots, and if any other injuries were reported.

Aerial footage from local outlets showed smoke wafting from the building in the aftermath.

An update sent to parents of children at the possibly-targeted preschool said all students and staff were safe following the incident.

Multiple other schools in the neighboring area went into immediate lockdown in the wake of the incident.

FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed FBI personnel were among those on the scene following “the apparent vehicle ramming and active shooter situation.”

Attorney General Pam Bondi also said ATF agents are also on the scene assisting local law enforcement.

“Our @FBI and @ATFHQ agents are on the scene assisting local authorities at Temple Israel synagogue in West Bloomfield, Michigan. Please pray,” she wrote on X.

President Trump has also been briefed about on the synagogue “shooting,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters.

So far, cops have only described the incident as an “active situation” and urged locals to stay away from the area.

“We are aware of an active security incident at Temple Israel,” the Jewish Federation of Detroit said in a statement.

“Law enforcement are responding. Our Jewish agencies are currently in precautionary lockdown. We ask community members to stay away from the area at this time.”

Oakland County, Michigan, outside of Detroit — where Temple Israel is located — has one of the largest Jewish populations outside of the New York area.

It is also located about 20 miles north of Dearborn, which has the largest Muslim and Arab population in the US.

IDF says it hit IRGC's Basij militia sites in Tehran

 The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced on Thursday that its troops targeted during recent airstrikes the assets and operatives of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' Basij unit, stationed at several locations in Tehran.

"After identifying the deployment, over the past day, the Israeli Air Force, acting on IDF intelligence, has targeted the Basij roadblocks and operatives," the military stated in a post on Telegram.

The IDF claimed that as part of the "Iranian terrorist regime's security apparatus," the Basij forces have carried out "terror attacks for years" and "violently" suppressed the country's recent anti-government protests.

S. Arabia, UAE intercept Iranian drones, missiles

 The defense ministries of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates reported on Thursday that they intercepted multiple drones and missiles launched toward their territories.

The Saudi ministry said in a post on X that the kingdom's military intercepted and destroyed seven drones that were heading toward the Shaybah oil field near the country's border with the UAE, as well as a missile aimed at the Prince Sultan Air Base.

Meanwhile, the UAE noted its defenses intercepted ten ballistic missiles and 26 drones on Thursday and stressed it is "fully prepared and ready to deal with any threats, and will firmly confront any attempts to undermine State security" amid the "blatant Iranian aggression."

Army seeks masked thieves who lifted drones from base as Iran retaliation fears spike

 The Army is offering a fat reward for the capture of two thieves who stole drones from a base — amid fears of a possible Iranian drone strike on US soil.

The Army Criminal Investigation Division is offering a $5,000 reward for info leading to the arrest of the thieves who lifted the drones from Kentucky’s Fort Campbell in November.

The drones were stolen between Nov. 21 and 24, but officials didn’t reveal when they were discovered missing.

The drones were Skydio X10D systems — light, long-range quadcopters used for aerial surveillance and reconnaissance.

These use AI to avoid obstacles and can connect to 5G cellular networks, giving them nearly unlimited signal range, according to the Skydio website.

They’re worth nearly $30,000 apiece, according to ABJ Drone Academy.

Army investigators released images of a pair of suspects wearing gloves, light jackets, and winter hats. One wore a mask.

Officials also released images of two suspicious vehicles: a four-door sedan and a pickup truck.

Local media outlet WXYZ reports that the incident at Temple Israel Synagogue occurred around 12:30 p.m. local time. The synagogue is located off Walnut Lake Road near Drake Road in West Bloomfield.

The Jewish Federation of Detroit said it is aware of a "security incident" at Temple Israel.

Here's the statement:

"We are aware of a security incident at Temple Israel. We are advising all Jewish organizations to go into lockout protocol - nobody in or out of your building. More information to follow."

Statement from Michigan State Police:

"We are asking community members to stay away from the area to allow for a police response. Troopers are also increasing patrols at other places of worship in the district."

The attack comes as U.S. terrorism fears run high amid 12 days of U.S.-Israeli bombing in Iran.

West Virginia can ban Medicaid coverage for gender-affirming surgery, US court rules

 A U.S. appeals court on Tuesday upheld West Virginia's ban on Medicaid coverage for gender-affirming surgeries, the latest victory for Republican-led states seeking to curb the procedures amid an ongoing national battle over transgender rights. 

In a unanimous ruling, a three-judge panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Virginia, overturned a judge's decision that the 2004 statute violated anti-discrimination protections under two federal laws as well as the U.S. Constitution's promise of equal protection under the law.

The 4th Circuit panel wrote that the law applies to specific procedures and not to specific individuals, and so it does not unlawfully discriminate against transgender people. 

Republican President Donald Trump's administration has joined Republican-led states in seeking to curb gender-affirming treatment and transgender rights more broadly. 

More than a dozen U.S. states prohibit or limit Medicaid coverage for gender-affirming care. Medicaid is the joint federal-state health insurance program for low-income people.

The 4th Circuit became the first federal appeals court to uphold such a law, and did so after the U.S. Supreme Court last year rejected a challenge to a Tennessee law that bans gender-affirming treatment for minors. 

The full 4th Circuit in 2024 had struck down West Virginia's law as discriminatory, but the Supreme Court last year directed it to reconsider this case and a separate one involving North Carolina, in light of its decision in the Tennessee case.

The three judges on the panel that ruled on Tuesday were appointed by Republican presidents, two by Trump and one by George H.W. Bush. All three had dissented in 2024 when the full 4th Circuit in an 8-6 ruling declared West Virginia's law invalid. They laid out similar reasoning on Tuesday while citing the Supreme Court ruling 70 times over 35 pages. 

"It is not irrational for a legislature to encourage citizens to appreciate their sex and not become disdainful of their sex by refusing to fund experimental procedures that may have the opposite effect," Judge Julius Richardson, a Trump appointee, wrote for the court.

The type of surgeries at issue in the West Virginia law generally alter physical characteristics to align with a person's gender identity, including chest reconstruction, genital alteration and facial procedures.

West Virginia Attorney General John McCuskey, a Republican, said the state should not be subsidizing "unproven, non-essential medical procedures." 

"Every dollar spent on these unproven procedures takes away funding that could be used to treat cancer, heart disease and diabetes," McCuskey said.

Lambda Legal, an LGBT rights group that represents plaintiff Shauntae Anderson, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. 

U.S. District Judge Robert Chambers, an appointee of Democratic former President Bill Clinton, had ruled in favor of Anderson in 2022.

The 4th Circuit last year sent the case involving a similar North Carolina law back to a lower court for further proceedings. At least seven other states including Florida, Georgia and Arizona have faced lawsuits for banning or limiting insurance coverage for gender-affirming care.

Trump has issued a series of executive orders on transgender rights including a proclamation that there are only two sexes, male and female, and a person's sex cannot change. Trump also banned transgender people from the U.S. military.

The Trump administration has proposed barring providers from receiving funds under the Medicare and Medicaid government insurance programs if they provide gender-affirming treatment to minors, prompting lawsuits that are pending. 

The Federal Trade Commission, which enforces consumer protection laws, is investigating medical groups over their support for gender-affirming treatments, an action the groups call unlawful retaliation for constitutionally protected speech.
