United States Trade Representative (USTR) Jamieson Greer confirmed that the Trump administration has opened investigations under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 into 16 major economies.
The probes will examine whether foreign policies and practices linked to manufacturing overcapacity are unfair or discriminatory and whether they restrict US commerce. These investigations may lead to tariffs or other trade measures, depending on the findings. "The United States will no longer sacrifice its industrial base to other countries that may be exporting their problems with excess capacity and production to us," Greer said. He clarified that the USTR will hold consultations with the countries under review.
The economies under investigation include China, the European Union, Singapore, Switzerland, Norway, Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia, Thailand, South Korea, Vietnam, Taiwan, Bangladesh, Mexico, Japan and India.
