Microsoft Corporation announced on Tuesday its support for Anthropic PBC amid the latter's feud with the United States Department of Defense (DoD) and urged the legal system to introduce a restraining order that would prevent the Pentagon from designating artificial intelligence (AI) companies as supply chain risks.
In a filing with the US District Court in San Francisco, Microsoft noted that the Pentagon's decision to name the $380 billion-valued startup as a supply chain risk directly impacts the tech giant.
"As an Anthropic partner, Microsoft believes the Court should temporarily enjoin implementation of the Determination for all existing contracts and their ongoing use of Anthropic products, including with and through Microsoft products," Microsoft said. It noted that "a temporary restraining order will enable a more orderly transition." Otherwise, Microsoft said, it will be forced to "act immediately to alter existing product and contract configurations used by DoW [Department of War]."
