'IRGC adviser says prolonging war could serve Iran’s deterrence strategy - PBS'

Mohammad Reza Naqdi, senior adviser to the commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, said Iran could prolong the war until the next US presidential term as part of an effort to impose costs and deter future attacks, in an interview with PBS NewsHour correspondent Reza Sayah in Tehran.

“One way is to prolong this war until we get to the next term of the presidency and cause attrition, so that if anyone else wants to attack Iran, they will know there is a cost,” Naqdi said.

Asked how many missiles Iran had left in its stockpile, Naqdi said, “The number of missiles we manufacture every day is more than the number we launch. In a country this vast, we can make them wherever we want.”

Naqdi said Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei had not appeared publicly during the war for security reasons. Asked whether he had seen Khamenei, he replied: “Let’s leave this matter alone.”

WH unveils files on FBI effort to suppress Biden scandal

The White House Government Transparency Task Force on Wednesday released documents alleging that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) sought to neutralize the Biden family corruption scandal during the 2020 election.

The documents show that Joe Biden, Hunter Biden, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, John Kerry and George Soros were classified as alleged victims of Russian disinformation, while figures including Mike Pompeo, Jim Jordan and Bill Barr were labeled "conduits" through which such false information was supposedly spread.

The files further allege that the FBI had at least 14 confidential human sources providing derogatory information about Joe Biden, but that analysts involved in Round River labeled some of the intelligence as Russian disinformation, investigative journalist John Solomon wrote, who was also named as one of the "conduits" by the FBI. More documents on the operation are expected in the coming weeks.

Putin Threatens Seizures Of European Ships Over EU's "Piracy & Banditry"

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday addressed the persisting issue of European governments and navies seizing what they deem Russian 'shadow fleet' vessels off Europe's coast.

The past year alone has seen several examples, sometimes involving French or Swedish commandos descending onto a tanker's deck from helicopters and arresting crew members. The seized vessels are then taken to nearby European ports.

The latest European Union sanctions package passed last month stipulates that EU members can sell the oil or any seized cargo obtained from these 'shadow fleet' vessels.

Putin has reiterated Kremlin outrage at this scheme, condemning it as "piracy and banditry". This after Sweden has lately declared its intent to hand seized Russian grain over to Ukraine.

The Russian leader's patience has reached its limit, apparently, as he is now putting European governments that their own ships become at risk of seizure in return.

"We will be forced to respond in kind," Putin said while overseeing naval drills in Russia's Far East, aboard the Russian cruiser Varyag off the island of Sakhalin.

Russian forces will act "wherever we ourselves deem necessary and appropriate — anywhere," he added.

According to some of his fuller remarks as translated and presented in Reuters:

"We can see that the authorities of certain countries, in violation of international maritime law, are attempting to restrict the movement of our economic operators’ vessels..., and have recently gone so far as to consider the possibility of seizing our vessels and selling off the property they have plundered from us," said Putin.

"Naturally, this is nothing less than piracy and robbery. And if this begins to be put into practice, we shall be forced to respond in kind. And not necessarily in those waters where raids on our ships and vessels are planned, but wherever we ourselves deem it necessary and appropriate."

So while Russia would not likely act in European waters, such a scenario would be more likely to go down in places like the Black Sea or Baltic region, or perhaps the faraway Indian Ocean.

Putin also took the opportunity to address broader tensions with NATO and spillover from the Ukraine conflict, but also as it specifically impacts the Pacific and Arctic regions...

"We can see that, unfortunately, the potential for conflict is growing here; NATO is making inroads here; new military-political blocs are being formed; and new weapons systems are being deployed here, or are planned for deployment, which also pose a threat to our country," the president said.

Ceuta Migrants Reach Mainland Spain Despite Government Denials: Report

 Via American Greatness,

Dozens of migrants who entered the Spanish territory of Ceuta during last month’s massive border surge have reportedly reached mainland Spain, contradicting the socialist government’s insistence that none had left the North African enclave.

Sky News reported Tuesday, citing Spanish police sources, that about 75 migrants who entered Ceuta in late July had reached Andalucía in southern Spain.

“Spanish sources in Andalucía said that around 75 migrants out of the estimated 72,000 who entered Ceuta illegally in a mass rush to the border at the end of July had reached the mainland,” Sky News reported.

The report directly conflicts with assurances from the government of socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.

“Nobody has left the city towards the peninsula, nor can they do so,” Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares said Tuesday during a visit to Ceuta.

Tens of thousands of mostly male North African migrants entered Ceuta on July 30, overwhelming the territory’s law enforcement, migrant processing facilities and other public services. Estimates have placed the number of arrivals between 60,000 and 80,000, approaching Ceuta’s normal population of about 80,000.

The surge followed a Spanish judicial ruling preventing authorities from immediately returning migrants who reach Spanish territory by land and requiring a longer legal process before removal.

Ceuta President and Mayor Juan Jesús Vivas has sharply criticized Madrid’s response and disputed the government’s portrayal of the crisis as under control.

“Ceuta has suffered and continues to suffer an invasion,” Vivas said Tuesday.

“We calculate that 10,000 immigrants are still in Ceuta and this creates an unsustainable situation.”

“The reaction of the government has not been on par with the demands of what occurred,” he added.

“A violation of the territorial integrity of Spain has occurred.”

The numbers provided by Madrid and local officials have also raised questions about the whereabouts of thousands of migrants. El País reported that the Sánchez government says 70,000 people entered Ceuta and 7,000 have been deported. El Mundo reported Monday that local officials estimate about 11,000 remain in Ceuta out of roughly 80,000 who entered.

Police sources told Sky News the crossings to mainland Spain represented a “worrying reactivation” of the migration route across the Strait of Gibraltar.

Albares nevertheless maintained Tuesday that the government would ultimately remove those who entered illegally.

“Up to the last person who entered irregularly into Spain will return to Morocco,” he said.

El País noted that Albares did not provide a specific timetable or mechanism for carrying out those removals.

The reports that migrants have reached mainland Spain add to mounting questions over Madrid’s handling of the crisis and whether the Sánchez government has accurately accounted for those who entered Ceuta.

Hearing scheduled in Luigi Mangione case sparking speculation of plea deal

An unexpected hearing in Luigi Mangione’s federal case has been scheduled for Friday morning — fueling speculation that the alleged United Healthcare CEO killer could cop a plea deal.

Prosecutors and Mangione’s lawyers filed a joint letter requesting the hearing at 11 a.m. in Manhattan federal court, where the 28-year-old is charged with two counts of stalking resulting in death.

Two other counts, including a death-penalty-eligible count of murder through use of a firearm, were dismissed, but Mangione still faces up to life in prison if convicted in the federal case.

The self-styled Maryland martyr is simultaneously charged in state court for the alleged murder of Brian Thompson, 50, who was gunned down in Manhattan in December 2024.

The surprise appearance comes months after Mangione’s attorneys had fruitless talks with the feds about a potential plea deal, NBC News reported, citing anonymous “sources familiar with the matter.”

Mangione’s top lawyer Karen Friedman Agnifilo ripped the government at the time for allegedly trying to “prejudice” the public against the infamous alleged assassin.

“This information attributed to ‘anonymous sources’ is part of a troubling, deliberate pattern by prosecutors and law enforcement to prejudice Luigi, manipulate public opinion, and violate his constitutional right to a fair trial and impartial jury,” Friedman Agnifilo said at the time. Every defendant in America is presumed innocent until proven guilty, including Luigi, who, unlike any other defendant, has to fight the same charges twice.”

A federal plea deal could lead to the state charges being tossed because of New York’s rules against double jeopardy, or being tried twice for the same crime.

But the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office has argued that it has “primary jurisdiction” to try the case because it charged Mangione with the murder first.

State prosecutors would fight to block any proposed federal plea that “would operate to defeat a just outcome in the state prosecution,” Assistant District Attorney Joel Seidemann wrote in a letter filed with the state court last month.

“Obviously, any guilty pleas in these matters must account for the seriousness of defendant’s offenses, the loss of an innocent life, the impact of those crimes on the victim’s family, and the other state interests that are implicated, including the sanctity of life principle that underpins the state homicide charges,” Seidemann wrote.

The US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York declined to comment on Wednesday.

A spokeswoman repping Mangione’s legal team did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Friday’s surprise federal conference comes just weeks before Mangione’s state trial is set to begin with jury selection on September 8.

The University of Pennsylvania graduate has pleaded not guilty in both cases.Prosecutors say he penned a detailed “manifesto” explaining his motivations to kill Thompson, a father of two, outside UnitedHealthcare’s annual investor conference to “rebel against the deadly, greed fueled health insurance cartel.

“UnitedHealthcare and other insurance providers were justifiable targets because the industry “literally extracts human life force for money,” Mangione allegedly wrote.

'Iran Quds Force chief asked Iraq to delay state arms monopoly - Al Arabiya'

Iran's Quds Force commander Esmail Qaani asked the Iraqi government during a recent secret visit to postpone efforts to enforce a state monopoly on weapons, Al Arabiya English reported on Wednesday, citing sources.

Qaani told Iraqi leaders that moving to bring weapons solely under state control at this time would be viewed as "a stab in the back" to Iran, according to the report.

He also said enforcing a state monopoly on arms in Iraq could pave the way for efforts to control Iran-aligned factions in other countries, the sources told Al Arabiya.

The Quds Force is the foreign operations arm of Iran's Revolutionary Guards and has long maintained close ties with armed groups in Iraq and elsewhere in the region.
