Mamdani admits anti-Israel fervor helped his radical NYC House candidates sweep

Mayor Zohran Mamdani admitted that his slate of candidates campaigning against Israel in favor of the Palestinian cause helped secure Tuesday’s election sweep — and repeated that he opposes Israel functioning as a Jewish-led state.

Mamdani, 34, said it’s a turning point in the Democratic Party with rank-and-file members opposing — rather than supporting — Israel in Middle East conflicts.

“We’ve seen on Tuesday evening, we saw Democrats turn out in districts across the city to make clear that they were tired of tens of billions of dollars being spent in our taxpayer dollars to violate international law, to kill thousands of civilians,” the mayor said Sunday on ABC News’ “This Week” program.

He said there’s supposed to be a “ceasefire” in Gaza but “more than a thousand Palestinians have been killed in that ceasefire.”

“And what New Yorkers want to see is a politics of conscience, a politics of clarity, a politics of conviction. And to follow international law, to believe in the humanity of all people, it shouldn’t be a journey too far. And I think that our party needs to hear what Democrats are telling them,” Mamdani told host Jonathan Karl.

That puts Mamdani in agreement with New York State Democratic Party chairman Jay Jacobs, who told The Post Sunday that anti-Israel fervor played a role in sinking more pro-Israel establishment incumbents.

Mamdani-backed candidates — including Israel-bashing firebrand Darializa Avila Chevalier and former city Comptroller Brad Lander — upset incumbent Reps. Adriano Espaillat and Dan Goldman, respectively. Both incumbents back the Jewish state.

Assemblywoman Claire Valdez — a Democratic Socialists of America member also backed by Mamdani — also won a vacant seat over Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso replacing the retiring Rep. Nydia Velazquez in Brooklyn-Queens District 7.

“Yes, I do think the Israel-Palestinian issue had an impact in the election,” said Jacobs, a pro-Israel moderate. “It hurt establishment Democrats.”

“There are people who may have voted against Espaillat and Goldman because of it,” he added. “It was important to the activists who came out and voted.”

Meanwhile, Mamdani repeated that he opposes Israel being run as an official Jewish state.

“The way I see it is, equal rights for all people. And I think that’s the truth for Israel,” Mamdani said Sunday.

Pressed if he supported Israel as a Jewish state, Mamdani said, “I think any state that privileges one religion over the other is one that I can’t tell you I support, whether it be Israel or Saudi Arabia or anywhere else. And a lot of that comes back to a fundamental belief that we should all be considered equal, no matter what our faith is.”

Inmates take over eastern NC jail, release detention officers who were held hostage

Inmates overtook parts of the Bertie-Martin Regional Detention Center in eastern North Carolina early Monday morning, officials said.

Multiple agencies responded to a "significant disturbance" at the jail around 5 a.m. During the incident, two of three on-duty guards were taken hostage. The third guard managed to escape. Officials say there were 88 inmates in the facility at the time.

Negotiations ultimately resulted in the safe release of 18 inmates and the two hostages by approximately 9:30 a.m. Shortly after, around 9:50 a.m., another large group of inmates was allowed to exit the facility. As the situation unfolded, authorities worked diligently to restore control over the detention center peacefully.

“Our top priority is the safety of our staff, inmates, and the surrounding community,” Sheriff Tyrone Ruffin stated. He noted that multiple law enforcement partners are being coordinated to resolve the situation as swiftly and safely as possible.

A secure perimeter has been established around the detention center, and authorities are urging the public to steer clear of the area during operations. Officials confirmed that there is no ongoing threat to the general public.

Law enforcement agencies involved in the response include the Bertie County Sheriff's Office, Martin County Sheriff's Office, NC SBI, NC ALE, FBI, and multiple local sheriff’s offices.

Citadel Securities Warns of ‘Shifting Landscape’ Under Warsh Fed

Investors are underestimating how determined Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh is to bring inflation back to the central bank’s 2% target and the likely drag that will create on risk assets, according to Citadel Securities.

Nohshad Shah, the firm’s head of EMEA fixed-income sales, said in a note to clients that the recent decline in oil prices does little to weaken the case for the Fed to hike interest rates, given that underlying inflation pressures remain elevated.

Katz: No territorial ambitions in Lebanon, no pullback

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said on Monday that Israel has "no territorial ambitions in Lebanon" but "will not withdraw a millimeter" further "until Hezbollah is disarmed."

Speaking to reporters, he said Israel is unlikely to leave other areas in southern Lebanon beyond two positions included in a pilot program for Lebanese army control. He added: "People should not hold their breath wondering where the next place will be from which Israel will withdraw in Lebanon, because it will not happen until Hezbollah is disarmed."

On border villages, Katz said it was "clear that the Shiite villages along the line of contact had to disappear" to protect Israel's border from Hezbollah. He claimed that in the western and central sectors of southern Lebanon there is "almost 100% destruction in the villages along the line of contact," while in the eastern sector "73% of the villages are destroyed."

BridgeBio’s achondroplasia pill shows ‘compelling’ growth and body proportionality benefit

BridgeBio Pharma plans to file for approval in the third quarter. If granted, the oral drug could present a “highly differentiated” option over current achondroplasia therapies, according to Jefferies.

BridgeBio Pharma’s oral achondroplasia drug not only boosts growth in children but also significantly boosts body proportionality—a finding that analysts say could set the pill apart from competitors for treating the most common cause of dwarfism.

BridgeBio plans to file a regulatory package for infigratinib in the third quarter, with a potential launch “in early to mid 2027,” the company said Sunday.

In the Phase 3 PROPEL 3 study, BridgeBio enrolled more than 110 children with achondroplasia who were randomly assigned to receive a daily dose of the biotech’s drug or placebo. Results presented on Sunday showed that in a prespecified exploratory analysis, infigratinib led to significant improvements in the body proportion of patients compared to placebo.

This advantage in proportionality is “compelling,” Jefferies told investors in a note on Sunday, “since other players do not seem to hit stat-sig.” Indeed, BridgeBio claimed that infigratinib “achieved the first statistically significant improvement in body proportionality against placebo in achondroplasia.”

For Jefferies, the proportionality outcome could lead to broader benefits for patients. “We think proportionality drives meaningful outcomes in daily activities and mobility,” the analysts wrote. “We are optimistic proportionality will be included in the label.”

The data were presented as a late-breaker at the 2026 International Congress of Children’s Bone Health and were simultaneously published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The presentation also included a readout for PROPEL 3’s primary efficacy endpoint, demonstrating a 2.1-cm/year advantage in annualized growth velocity in patients on infigratinib versus placebo—confirming topline data released in February.

“We think an oral option with proportionality benefits seems highly differentiated over the approved daily/weekly subQ” treatments for achondroplasia, Jefferies said. The firm conservatively estimates peak sales of $1 billion for infigratinib in achondroplasia.

Affecting one in 15,000 to 40,000 newborns, achondroplasia is a rare and genetic disorder that compromises bone development, in turn stunting growth in children. Other symptoms and complications include bowed legs, developmental delays, breathing problems and recurring infections.

Currently, there are two FDA-approved therapies available for patients. First to the market was BioMarin’s daily injection Voxzogo, which first won the regulator’s go-ahead in November 2021. Ascendis stepped up as a challenger in March, when the agency cleared the weekly therapy Yuviwel, also designed for subcutaneous delivery.

Ascendis appears to have caught BioMarin on the backfoot. In October 2025, BioMarin abandoned its previous objective of hitting $4 billion in revenue by 2027, a decision that stemmed largely from the competitive pressures on Voxzogo. The drug grew 3% year-on-year in the first quarter to bring in $220 million.

Honda starts data centre battery output at Ohio plant

Honda Motor has started producing batteries for artificial intelligence (AI) data centre energy storage systems (ESS) at a US facility in Ohio, originally intended for electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturing.

Production of ESS batteries began at the Ohio facility earlier this month in partnership with South Korea's LG Energy Solution.

The batteries store energy during peak solar generation and provide it during outages or periods of high demand.

Honda and LG Energy Solution announced the joint venture in 2022 with plans to produce lithium-ion EV batteries.

According to Nikkei Asia's report, the plant was completed in 2025, at a time when the EV market had cooled following the revocation of US federal tax incentives on EV purchases under US President Donald Trump.

Honda later revised its electrification plans and stopped development of three US-produced models, including one under its Acura luxury brand.

That left the Ohio plant without a role in EV supply.

The company bought the plant buildings and assets from LG Energy for $2.85bn.

It plans to start producing hybrid vehicle batteries there in 2028 and to alter output between ESS and hybrid products according to electrification trends.

Honda now obtains hybrid batteries from a Toyota Motor facility in North America.

Moving production in-house is expected to lower costs.

The automaker plans to introduce 15 hybrid models mainly in North America by fiscal year 2029.

The shift comes as other US automakers also move into energy storage.

General Motors changed a production line at its Tennessee battery plant to ESS output, brought back some previously laid-off workers, and plans to make sodium-ion batteries in Michigan as early as 2028.

Ford Motor set up a dedicated ESS subsidiary in May to supply power companies and data centres.

It also plans to repurpose a Kentucky EV battery factory previously run with South Korea's SK On, after that joint venture ended in December because of weak demand.

Geely to deliver first Lotus EVs to Canada in July under Carney-Xi deal

First shipment confirmed: Geely’s Lotus Eletre SUVs will arrive in Montreal in July under a Canada-China trade quota allowing reduced tariffs on up to 49,000 EVs annually.

Trade goals expand: Carney aims to boost Canadian exports to China by 50% by 2030, while Chinese officials suggest growth could reach 100% or more.

More brands to follow: BYD and Chery are working through Canadian certification, with BYD targeting sales next year and other brands eyeing joint ventures.

Chinese ambassador Wang Di confirmed that Geely’s Lotus Eletre SUVs will be delivered to Canada in July, with a ceremony planned in Montreal. This marks the first Chinese-owned, Chinese-built EVs to be sold under the Carney-Xi agreement, which slashes tariffs from over 100% to 6.1% on the first 49,000 vehicles annually. The model, a luxury SUV starting at C$119,900, contrasts with expectations of affordable Chinese EV imports.

Lotus Eletre market insights

The Eletre is a low-volume luxury car, not the cheap city EV Canadians expected.

The first shipment will be delivered in Montreal with a ceremony planned.

Other Chinese brands like BYD and Chery are still completing Canadian certification.

How the Carney-Xi deal could reshape Canada's auto market
The January trade deal between Prime Minister Carney and President Xi allows a growing quota of Chinese EV imports at sharply reduced tariffs, starting at 49,000 units and rising to 70,000 over five years. In return, China eased some tariffs on Canadian goods, though duties remain high on key exports like canola oil and pork. The arrangement could diversify Canada’s EV supply, attract joint ventures, and reduce reliance on U.S. trade, but also risks political friction with Washington
Political and industry responses to the first shipment
U.S. officials have criticised Canada’s decision to open its market to Chinese EVs while the U.S. bans certain Geely brands like Polestar. Canadian officials emphasise economic diversification, while Chinese automakers such as BYD and Chery work toward compliance for future imports. Industry observers note that Tesla has already capitalised on the tariff cuts by importing Shanghai-built Model 3s at significantly lower prices than U.S.-made versions.

What comes next for Canada-China EV trade
Ambassador Wang expects more Chinese brands to enter Canada by autumn, with BYD planning multiple dealerships and Chery meeting with local partners. Future trade growth could hinge on whether China extends temporary tariff relief on Canadian agricultural exports and on market demand for premium EVs. Two plausible scenarios emerge: a steady expansion of EV imports leading to deeper bilateral trade, or a slowdown if political tensions or market mismatches undermine early momentum.
