The European Commission requested the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) to investigate British politician Peter Mandelson while he was serving as European commissioner for trade between 2004 and 2008.
A spokesperson for the Commission told the Financial Times that the formal request to OLAF was made on February 18, following the release of thousands of documents linking Mandelson with convicted sexual offender Jeffrey Epstein. "As new documents were published recently, we are looking into these and assessing whether there is any breach of the respective obligations," the spokesperson said.
Earlier in the week, Mandelson was arrested in the UK on charges of misconduct in public office after his links to Epstein were unveiled. However, he was later released on bail.
