New York Governor Kathy Hochul dropped a proposal that would have greenlit the launch of commercial robotaxi services, such as Alphabet's Waymo, in select areas of the state. "Based on conversations with stakeholders, including the legislature, it was clear that the support was not there to advance this proposal," governor's spokesperson Sean Butler said in a statement on Thursday.
In her State of the State address last month, Hochul stated that companies interested in piloting their services would have to submit applications that "demonstrate local support for AV deployment and adherence to the highest possible safety standards." Labor unions, rideshare drivers, and transit employees scrutinized the idea, voicing worries about safety hazards and possible job losses due to robotaxis.
