Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi vowed on Wednesday that her Liberal Democratic Party, which has a two-thirds majority in Japan's House of Representatives, will adopt the 2026 government budget "as swiftly as possible." She also promised a "fundamental" overhaul of the budget over the next two years and backed multi-year budgets as a way to strengthen investment and research funding.
In her first speech after her reelection, Takaichi added that she will accelerate discussions on the feasibility and financing of tax cuts and called on lawmakers from other parties to cooperate in the process. She also repeated her intention to strengthen Japan's defensive capabilities.
