Dubai’s financial center was hit in an Iranian drone attack on Friday, leaving a huge cloud of black smoke rising over the heart of the neutral city.
The surreal scene in the United Arab Emirates city came from an inferno caused by debris from an interception drone, according to authorities.
A building at the Dubai International Financial Center was hit with debris during a “successful interception,” authorities said.
The damage was “minor” to a façade of the building, the emirate’s communication office told the Financial Times, despite the huge clouds of billowing smoke.
No injuries were reported.
Locals told the outlet that it was among the loudest booms since the region was plunged into violence after the US and Israel began their airstrikes against the extremist Iranian regime.
“It was so loud that I thought my windows would shatter,” one resident reportedly said.
Iran vowed earlier this week to attack banks and financial institutions after an airstrike hit a Tehran bank.
The conflict started almost two weeks ago when American and Israeli forces opened fire and killed many of Tehran’s top officials, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Lana Nusseibeh, former UAE ambassador to the United States, said Friday her nation and other countries were stunned that Iran aimed its firepower at them.
But the diplomat, now the minister of state in the UAE’s foreign ministry, said she believes a negotiated settlement can end the war.
“Ultimately, it will be a diplomatic solution, but there needs to be that tipping point moment, and I think that President Trump will lead us all to that moment in his time,” Nusseibeh told Reuters.
