United States President Donald Trump rejected his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin's offer to transfer Iran's enriched uranium to Russia as part of a deal to end the war against Iran, Axios reported on Friday, citing a US official.
Putin made the proposal during a phone call with Trump earlier this week, the source said. "This is not the first time it was offered. It hasn't been accepted. The US position is we need to see the uranium secured," the official stated.
According to the report, Russia floated similar proposals during the nuclear negotiations between the US and Iran last May, before the United States and Israel attacked Iranian nuclear facilities in June, and in the weeks leading up to the start of the current war. Iran rejected the idea of moving its uranium to another country and suggested diluting it in its own facilities under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency, the source said.
