The White House granted the Secretary of Energy more independence to manage national resources during an emergency, as the conflict with Iran threatens global oil supplies.
President Trump signed an amended executive order Friday that added the Secretary of Energy to an existing rule allowing the Secretary of Commerce to hold certain authorities for national defense.
Both secretaries can now act with greater independence under the Defense Production Act to take actions without getting certain clearances.
The order comes as the conflict in Iran is threatening to disrupt oil shipments from the Middle East, causing prices to rise.
