Iran's semiofficial Fars news agency reported at least 15 explosions on Saturday, with thick smoke billowing over Kharg Island after being hit by US missiles, but claimed that no oil infrastructure was damaged in the attack.
According to the report, the strikes targeted an air defense installation, a naval base, an airport control tower, and a helicopter hangar belonging to an offshore oil company. US President Donald Trump said earlier that US forces "obliterated" Iranian military sites on the island, off Iran's southwest coast, and threatened that the oil infrastructure there may be destroyed next.
Kharg Island is an economic lifeline for Iran, accounting for about 90% of the country's crude exports.
