Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said on Monday that the European Union sanctions speed a "descent into irrelevance," accusing the bloc of hypocrisy over its stance on Iran.
"EU's inhuman sanctions on Iran were never about 'human rights' — they were designed to trample the basic rights of ordinary Iranians," Baghaei wrote on X. He added the policy shows "double-standard & hypocrisy" and warned such positions "won't earn ... an ounce of credibility" on the global stage.
The remarks come after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said it is "too early" to lift sanctions, citing Iran's behavior and human rights record.
