United Airlines Inc. CEO Scott Kirby (pictured) confirmed on Monday that he had reached out to American Airlines Inc. to discuss a potential merger.
"By combining our airlines and using that scale to revolutionize our customers' experience, we'd create a new, thriving US airline that would be the very best in the world for customers – full stop," Kirby said in a statement. However, he underlined that United's pursuit of talks with the rival air carrier is now over.
Kirby's statement comes after American Airlines CEO Robert Isom publicly rejected the idea of a merger with United, claiming that combining the two largest airlines would be "bad for customers" and "bad for the industry."
