The United States Department of Defense reported on Thursday that the US forces seized the "sanctioned stateless" oil tanker M/T Majestic X in the Indian Ocean within the US Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM) area of responsibility, under suspicion that the vessel was transporting oil from Iran.
"We will continue global maritime enforcement to disrupt illicit networks and interdict vessels providing material support to Iran, wherever they operate. International waters cannot be used as a shield by sanctioned actors. The Department of War will continue to deny illicit actors and their vessels freedom of maneuver in the maritime domain," the Pentagon said in a post on X.
The seizure of the Guyana-flagged oil tanker follows Iran's attacks on three cargo ships in the Strait of Hormuz yesterday, which White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt claimed did not constitute a ceasefire violation, because the ships did not belong to the US.
