A bipartisan group of US lawmakers released the text of the updated Russia sanctions bill on Tuesday. The revised bill originally emerged from negotiations between the White House and late Senator Lindsey Graham, who passed away from a sudden illness on July 11, shortly after securing the administration’s backing.
If enacted, the bill will increase pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin by imposing 100% tariffs on the five biggest importers of Russian oil and gas, including China and India. Unlike the initial version of the legislation, the bill scales down a blanket 500% tariff on imports from countries that buy Russian oil or natural gas to a maximum 100% tariff on the top five buyers.
The bill’s sponsors are confident it has the necessary support to pass the Senate after securing the President’s support. Still, it is unclear when it will be brought to a floor vote.
