UAE said to plan new port to bypass Strait of Hormuz

The logistics company DP World, based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), is planning to build a new port on the UAE's east coast to avoid the Strait of Hormuz, the Financial Times reported on Monday, citing people briefed on the matter.

According to the report, the company intends to build a new multipurpose port in the coastal area of Fujairah and a new terminal at the existing port in the same emirate. The new project would allow containers to enter and leave the country without crossing the strait, before being transported by trucks to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and neighboring Gulf states.

The sources said that the new port could become operational within a year and a half. DP World told the news outlet that "there are plans in the works around diversification to get through this disruption," without disclosing more details.
