US Treasury hits 'cybercriminals' with sanctions

The United States Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced on Monday that it is sanctioning two individuals and one entity "enabling ransomware actors’ and other cybercriminals' malign activities" against US citizens.

The Treasury expanded its sanctions list by adding First VPN Service (1VPNS), "a virtual private network (VPN) provider selling services to ransomware groups," its administrator, Dmytro Rashevskyi, as well as Yegeniy Vladimirovich Silayev, an individual who sells 'cryptors,' to it.

"Under [US] President [Donald] Trump's leadership, Treasury is using every available tool to disrupt the cybercriminal ecosystem and protect the American people," an official from the administration said. Today's action was coordinated with the United Kingdom's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).
