Bessent: Hormuz will become irrelevant in next 2 years

United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Friday that he thinks that the Strait of Hormuz will become "irrelevant" over the next two years as energy deliveries move from the waterway routes to underground pipelines.

"The strait is never going back to the way it was because the Iranians have used, or tried to use it, as a choke point. What we are going to see over the next two years, the strait is going to become irrelevant," Bessent said. "It is going to become just another body of water, and I would say that more than 50 or 70% of the energy that moves through the strait now is going to go through underground pipelines," he added.

The US secretary also claimed that he expects an agreement on a 30- to 60-day ceasefire and the reopening of the strait "shortly," maybe even "today or tomorrow."
