Qatar, Iran discuss temporary joint shipping lane through Hormuz

Qatar and Iran discussed a proposed interim framework establishing a temporary joint shipping corridor through the Strait of Hormuz during talks in Tehran on Thursday, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry said.

Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also discussed an agreement to carry out a joint project to clear mines from the strait.

The talks covered regional developments, de-escalation efforts and creating conditions for dialogue, according to the ministry.

Sheikh Mohammed called for respect for neighboring countries’ sovereignty and freedom of navigation, and urged continued diplomacy to resolve disputes through dialogue.

Araghchi thanked Qatar for its diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions and support dialogue, the ministry added.
