US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will press G20 finance ministers next week to comply with Washington’s sanctions on Iran as the Trump administration steps up efforts to isolate Tehran economically, AFP reported Thursday, citing a US Treasury official.
Finance ministers and central bank governors from major G20 economies are due to meet in Asheville, North Carolina, on Monday and Tuesday.
The United States launched “Operation Economic Outcast” on Monday, sanctioning nearly 60 Iran-linked individuals, entities and vessels and expanding the threat of secondary sanctions against those continuing to do business with Tehran.
China, the main buyer of Iranian oil, is expected to be a key challenge for Washington as it seeks broader international compliance with its sanctions campaign.
