CIA Director John Ratcliffe pressed Russian officials during a visit to Moscow this week to reduce military and economic support for Iran, Politico reported, citing people familiar with the trip and a British official.
Ratcliffe told Russian officials that Washington wanted Moscow to stop sharing weapons and defense technology with Iran, Politico reported.
The CIA chief also advised Moscow against “overreacting” if Russia is affected by US sanctions tied to its economic links with Iran, the British official told Politico.
The report came after US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Monday threatened to widen sanctions on countries that do not cut economic ties with Iran.
Russia has provided material to Iran that could strengthen Tehran's drone capabilities and may be helping Iran identify targets for strikes against US facilities in the Middle East, Politico reported.
Ratcliffe made the rare, unannounced visit to Moscow on Tuesday. Politico said he also warned Russian officials against escalating tensions with NATO members, particularly Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
