United States Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced on Tuesday that the Department of War, in partnership with the Small Business Administration (SBA), is reestablishing the Smaller War Plants Commission.
The commission, modeled after the historic Smaller War Plants Corporation, will provide capital and expertise to small defense manufacturers to help expand domestic production of critical military equipment, such as rifles, Patriot missiles, and more. "This historic, long-term commitment will reinforce the industrial depth that stands proudly behind the strongest military in the world," Hegseth underlined.
The initiative revives a WWII-era effort to strengthen the United States defense industrial base and reduce reliance on foreign supply chains, with small manufacturers making up around 70% of the industry.
