Trump's 50% tariffs on Canadian goods take effect

United States President Donald Trump's 50% tariffs on about $20 billion worth of a wide array of Canadian goods kicked in as of 12:01 am ET on Saturday after a last-minute breakdown in talks.

The tariffs, which Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney vowed to match "dollar for dollar," will affect roughly 5% of Canadian shipments to the US, from hockey sticks to liquor. Carney said he recalled his negotiators following "unfair" and "uneconomic" last-minute changes from the US side.

Meanwhile, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stressed that talks collapsed "despite the US offer to Canada to receive the best treatment" of any major exporter to the US market. "In addition, Canada is continuing to maintain its prolonged retaliation against the United States, including, among other things, flat-out prohibitions on certain American goods and services," he added.
