More than a dozen civil society organizations have urged the United States Federal Trade Commission to investigate whether artificial intelligence companies are engaging in anticompetitive practices by purchasing, scanning, and destroying books to train their models, Axios reported on Friday.
The groups, including Demand Progress Education Fund and the Consumer Federation of America, argued that destroying physical books could restrict competitors’ access to training materials and permanently eliminate rare works.
The request follows reports that Anthropic spent millions acquiring books and removing their spines to scan them for training its Claude AI model.
