Saudi Arabia is pressing Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi to arrest and punish leaders of Iran-backed militias that have targeted the kingdom since the start of the Iran conflict, as Riyadh seeks to ease tensions with Baghdad while pursuing separate backchannel talks with Tehran, regional officials told Al-Monitor on Wednesday.
One regional official said Saudi Arabia wants those who ordered the attacks held accountable, not just the fighters who carried them out, saying Riyadh wants militia leaders to “be held accountable.” The demand comes after Saudi Arabia and the US carried out strikes against Iran-backed militia headquarters in eight Iraqi provinces on July 28 in retaliation for attacks on Saudi energy infrastructure.
