Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty told Al-Arabiya in an interview on Wednesday that Cairo established diplomatic contacts with Iran in an effort to reduce tensions.
"Communications with Iran aim to strengthen political and diplomatic solutions ... The chaotic situation, whether in the Strait of Hormuz or the Red Sea region, has severely negative repercussions on Egypt and the countries of the region. Everyone is affected by the events [in the area], so we are committed to working to de-escalate and are coordinating with the active parties and mediators," he commented.
While Egypt and Iran severed ties more than 40 years ago, there have been indications that the two are moving toward bettering relations in recent times, with high-level talks held in February 2026 securing an agreement in principle to restore diplomatic ties.
