US agencies warned Wednesday of an “active threat” targeting Siemens devices used across water, energy, manufacturing and other critical infrastructure sectors, Reuters reported.
The warning follows a series of cyber incidents targeting local water systems in several states in recent weeks that cybersecurity experts suspect are linked to Iran.
The advisory, issued by the NSA, FBI, Energy Department, Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Homeland Security’s cybersecurity agency, covers all Siemens S7 Series programmable logic controllers.
US agencies warned that successful breaches could disrupt critical processes, cause safety incidents, damage equipment or expose sensitive data.
The advisory said the hackers are using artificial intelligence to sharply reduce the technical expertise and time needed to develop exploits capable of compromising the systems.
