James Talarico and the Democrat candidates who lie to win

 by Andrea Widburg

One useful thing about the internet is that it makes it harder for candidates to disavow their past positions—especially those completely antithetical to what they now claim to believe. While it’s true that people will change their views (as I did) or find that their long-held views no longer align with their party’s position (as RFK Jr. has), what some Democrat candidates are doing looks like straight-out lying, with no crisis of conscience or shift in values involved.

The best example today is James Talarico, who looks like Howdy-Doody but has long espoused weird religious, racial, and sexual ideas that would have gotten Howdy-Doody instantly canceled back in the 1950s. Here are just some examples:

In sum, Talarico is self-loathing, obsessed with deviant sexuality, deeply racist, and espouses a view of Christianity that ignores the Bible and 2,000 years of church history. He is not your typical Texas candidate, and he’s beginning to realize he has a problem.

To address this problem, Talarico went on Fox News and disavowed his past votes and statements about sex, especially about children and transgenderism. He rejected boys in girls’ sports (although he gave himself an out the size of a whale when he added he would only do so when a boy’s presence risked safety or fairness) and insisted there were only two sexes. He also announced he’d support a ban on transing children—but again, gave himself an out by saying the Texas legislation he’d opposed was different.

However, one of those closest to him—the lesbian minister at Talarico’s church—assured someone, “I can guarantee you that once he gets elected, he’ll change his tune back to where he was.” She added that his staff was telling him to back down from the trans issue “just for the next 50 weeks...whatever, days.”

Check out the church website to appreciate that this church’s primary goal seems to be to advance leftist social and political issues on everything from so-called transgenderism to illegal immigration. The church doesn’t align itself with God. Instead, God is reconfigured to affirm leftist beliefs.

Significantly, Talarico isn’t the only Democrat who has lied to win—and we know they lied because, if these candidates won, their policy positions repudiated those statements; if they lost, they went right back to their original principles.

An obvious example is Barack Obama, who ran as a post-racial centrist. He then governed as a racially obsessed radical.

In Texas, Beto O’Rourke insisted he would confiscate guns during his 2019 presidential run, a position he continued to hold after the campaign. However, by 2022, when he was running for governor, he claimed he never wanted to take people’s guns, only to go back on that after the Uvalde shooting.

Kamala Harris’s flip-flops became the stuff of legend. In 2019, she was for banning fracking, socialized medicine (aka Medicare for all), confiscating guns, decriminalizing illegal immigration, banning plastic straws, and mandating EVs. By 2024, she’d repudiated, disavowed, or refused to speak out on any of those issues. Now, of course, she’s campaigning for Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed.

Democrats know that ordinary Americans dislike their policies. Rather than using persuasion—probably because they know it won’t work—many of them resort to blatant dishonesty. The internet reveals the truth, but the trick is to get that information to ordinary Americans, the ones who aren’t glued to the news.
