OpenAI copied millions of copyrighted news articles while recognizing the "potential threat" its technology posed to publishers, lawyers for The New York Times alleged in a new court filing on Thursday.
The filing is part of a lawsuit in which the Times and other media organizations are seeking billions of dollars in damages from OpenAI and Microsoft over the use of publishers' content to train AI models. The newspaper said OpenAI was motivated by the commercial value of its technology. Lawyers cited a 2017 statement by co-founder Greg Brockman about being "deeply motivated by the gazillions" he hoped to generate from commercialization.
OpenAI has argued that training on publicly available content constitutes fair use. The company says its models transform the material rather than reproduce it and do not substitute for news publishers.
