The Houthis' spokesman, Brigadier General Yahya Saree, stated on Wednesday that the movement downed Saudi Arabia's United States-made F-15 fighter jet that allegedly engaged in "hostile operations" over Yemen's Marib Governorate.
In a Telegram post, Saree said that the Houthis used a locally manufactured surface-to-air missile to intercept the jet. He also claimed that Saudi Arabia launched more than 450 airstrikes on Yemen's territory, which warranted a response. Saree also reiterated the Houthis' rejection of the claims that the group targeted the holy city of Mecca.
"The Yemeni Armed Forces will continue to protect our country's airspace and sovereignty from any aggression or violation by all available means, Allah's willing, Yemen's skies will not be violated," Saree wrote.
