The news: The world’s largest AI chip manufacturer is taking a cautious approach to actually using the technology itself, according to a senior TSMC executive.
Co-chief operating officer YJ Mii told students at National Taiwan University that AI was like a toddler with superpowers.
When asked about using AI at work, he said TSMC had adopted a cautious approach, particularly with sensitive research and development information, Bloomberg reported.
He pointed to incidents where OpenAI and Anthropic models had hacked into external organisations and the risk of data leaks when AI tools are used carelessly.
Mii also said TSMC does not find AI particularly useful for designing the next generation of semiconductor technology.
The context: TSMC’s market valuation has climbed more than 400% since 2023 as AI has driven enormous demand for its semiconductors.
Sceptical comments from one of the biggest beneficiaries of the AI boom could raise eyebrows among investors betting on the boom continuing.
What was said: “AI is like a three-year-old Superman. It can be quite powerful, but it doesn’t know what kind of damage it can inflict. And it doesn’t know right from wrong,” Mii said.
