An agreement between Iran and Oman on shipping arrangements in the Strait of Hormuz would not itself lead to the reopening of the waterway, an informed source close to Iran’s negotiating team told Tasnim news agency.
The source said Tehran and Muscat reached a final agreement in late August after intensive technical and diplomatic talks, with the arrangement expected to be announced soon at a meeting attended by foreign ministers from regional states.
The agreement “in no way means the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz,” the report said, adding that Hormuz will remain closed until Washington meets seven conditions set by Tehran.
According to the source, the agreement sets out new routes for vessels entering and leaving the Persian Gulf. The inbound route would lie entirely within Iranian territorial waters, while part of the outbound route would also pass through Iranian waters.
Traffic along the routes would operate under Iranian arrangements, the source said, adding that the southern route which Washington had pushed to reopen would be closed once the agreement was implemented.
