Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei stated on Saturday that "we must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models," due to growing risks and cybersecurity incidents.
In an opinion essay titled "We Must Pace the Frontier," Amodei argued that AI can have many benefits, such as curing most major diseases in the next decade, accelerating economic growth and spreading freedom and democracy. However, he stressed that there is a risk of "losing control of AI systems, misuse of AI for cyberattacks and bioterrorism, and serious economic disruption," which is why new models should be developed more carefully.
Amodei proposed a three-step plan to overcome the risks, including introducing third-party embedded evaluators, coordination of AI firms within democratic countries, and global coordination with "authoritarian governments," led by the United States government.
