EU said to plan to restrict social media for under-15s

The European Union plans to propose new rules restricting children under 15 from accessing social media and video-sharing platforms as part of a broader "EU KIDS Act" expected to be unveiled Thursday, Politico reported on Monday, citing draft documents and a person familiar with the matter.

The European Commission would require social media platforms, online gaming services, and AI chatbots to introduce age-verification measures aimed at preventing younger teens from accessing their services. The draft would also require companies to implement safeguards against abuse and addictive behavior. It proposes a tiered system under which children could access certain social media services before age 15 with parental supervision.

Austria, Greece, Australia, France, Spain, and the UK have all taken measures to limit children's access to social media.
