To support open borders, Democrats, such as New York's mayor, Zohran Mamdani, are always waxing the praises of immigrants as net contributors who form the very backbone of society.
According to Fox News
"Immigrants from every country, from every continent, who speak every language and worship in every conceivable way, drive our buses and our trains, teach our children how to read, and tend to us when we are sick," Mamdani said.
"Immigrants fought for the 8-hour workday for fair pay and workplace protections that deliver dignity into the lives of so many," he added.
But in the same speech, Mamdani also touted them for their value as welfare sponges, migrants in continuous need of government aid, which he adds, they are 'entitled to.'
He's launched a lawsuit, bringing along five other sanctuary jurisdictions against the Trump administration for clarifying the government's longtime rules excluding those migrants likely to become public charges from green cards (and even visas). A separate case has been brought forward by various state attorneys general, led by his political ally, Letitia James.

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced Monday that the city is suing the Trump administration over the new public charge rule, which would allow officials to deny green cards to immigrants who use government‑funded assistance programs.
The changes would affect immigrants who use programs such as Medicaid, public housing assistance and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
City officials said the new federal public charge rule lacks clear definitions and guardrails, calling it “an assault on immigrant families.”
Chicago, San Francisco, Santa Clara County, Seattle, King County in Washington and the Public Rights Project are also plaintiffs in the lawsuit led by New York City.
“The new public charge rule seeks to push immigrant families away from the programs that have kept people fed and healthy for decades,” Mamdani said. “New Yorkers will be afraid to see a doctor or ask for help they are legally entitled to. That fear will not stop at the families that the federal government is targeting. Families who remain fully eligible for benefits will feel a chilling effect, and all New Yorkers will pay for it.”
So which is it, net contributors who 'build' New York and other cities, or an imported underclass?
Obviously, he hopes to conflate the immigrants of the late 19th century, who came from Southern and Eastern Europe and took no government aid, with today's third- and fourth-world welfare seekers who poured in during the Obama and Biden administrations.

In his romanticization of all migrants as one and the same, he ignored that the productivve immigrants who came from Southern and Eastern Europe of the 19th and early 20th centuries had all been screened. Here's a sign of what the rules were on Ellis Island dating from 1882:

Those who are likely to become public charges have always been sent back. This goes back to 1882 at least, and was only ignored during the Biden years, which pursued an open borders policy.
Which tells us what this Mamdani speech talking out of both sides of his mouth is really about.
It isn't really about public benefits from migrants.
It's about creating more dependent migrants and about city governments' dependence on migrants, for state and federal funding which it gets more of as migrant counts grow. That federal money is used not just for aid to the lazy and non-productivve, but for employing more city and state bureaucrats to minister to them, as they work hard to expand the welfare class.
A green card, of course, is a direct path to U.S. citizenship. Cutting off foreigners who use the government services from green cards is cutting off the whole end purpose of importing a foreign underclass which is to produce dependent Democrat voters.
That's what this is really about and why Mamdani is fighting so hard to load up the wagon riders at the expense of the wagon pullers.
It's cynical, unsustainable, and outrageous, a grab for more of productive American citizens' resources against the emotionally bloodcurdling cry of 'people will die!'As usual, it's all about him and expanding his voting base to ensure himself a Mobotu-style grip of power.
