US Central Command spokesperson Captain Tim Hawkins said Wednesday that commercial traffic continued to move through the Strait of Hormuz and that Iran did not control the waterway.
“Traffic through the Strait of Hormuz continues to flow. Iran does not control it,” Hawkins said in a televised interview with Al Jazeera English.
He said US forces had helped facilitate the movement of commercial vessels carrying more than 900 million barrels of crude oil through the strait since early May.
Hawkins said the US maritime blockade on Iran remained “highly effective,” adding that more than 100 ships had been redirected for attempting to violate it.
He also said US forces had completed clearing mines from internationally recognized primary traffic lanes through the strait and that those lanes remained open.
On Yemen, Hawkins said CENTCOM was closely monitoring the advance of the Iran-backed Houthis and was working closely with Saudi Arabia.
“We have advisors on the ground who are sharing information robustly with our Saudi partners,” he said, adding that US personnel were also assisting Saudi forces with planning.
