Patrick Clancy sat for his first interview since his ex-wife Lindsay Clancy’s high-profile triple murder trial for fatally strangling their three children ended in a hung jury.
Patrick Clancy is expected to discuss grief, memories of his slain kids – 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson and 8-month-old Callan – and wild conspiracy theories being spread online about him in a “60 Minutes” interview airing Sunday.
CBS announced the exclusive sit-down with correspondent Ross Douthat and released a brief teaser clip showing the straight-faced father walking and sitting down just before the interview began.
“We’re ready? We’re good? We’re rolling,” an off-screen voice can be heard saying before the clip cuts to a black screen with the words “only on 60 Minutes” in all caps.
Lindsay Clancy’s trial captivated the nation over the defense team’s argument that she was legally insane due to postpartum psychosis when she fatally strangled her three children with exercise bands.
It ultimately ended in a hung jury and mistrial after a lone male holdout juror refused to find her not guilty by reason of insanity.
It remains unclear whether prosecutors in Massachusetts will move to retry the case on the same murder charges – after the first trial saw roughly 80 witnesses and experts take the stand over five weeks of testimony.
Prosecutors could also try to negotiate a plea deal with Lindsay Clancy, downgrade the charges or drop them altogether.
Patrick Clancy, who was the first witness to take the stand over two days in July, called the prospect of a second trial “extraordinarily painful” in a statement released by his lawyer following the staggering mistrial declaration earlier this month.
His attorney also lashed out at the “escalating campaign of misinformation” being waged against the dad by unhinged influencers and “minor celebrities” seeking attention throughout the trial.
“Over the past months, Patrick Clancy and his family have been subjected to a relentless, escalating and destructive defamation campaign,” his lawyer, Howard Cooper, told Boston 25 News.
“This campaign of misinformation has been launched and promoted by minor celebrities, so-called influencers and outright conspiracy theorists who appear intent on boosting their own social media profiles and potential profit by publishing what they know to be outright falsehoods that Patrick was somehow involved in the death of his young children and other vile claims.”
Cooper said the repugnant accusations worsened after the mistrial was announced.
“This campaign, now fueled by insatiable media coverage, remains at a fever pitch and has resulted in real-life threats to his reputation, livelihood, and life,” Cooper said, adding that his client wanted to be able to “return his attention to what matters: preserving the memory of Cora, Dawson and Callan Clancy and supporting other women facing perinatal mental health challenges.”
The lawyer also left the door open to pursuing legal action against those making the baseless claims.
“Enough is enough — this spread of blatant and baseless falsehoods must stop. Those responsible should understand that there will be consequences, and every appropriate measure will be pursued to hold them accountable, including legally. Law enforcement has been notified,” he said.
During the first trial, Patrick Clancy told the 12-person jury that his ex-wife repeatedly sought help for her worsening mental state in the lead up to the killings and hauntingly recalled finding her partially paralyzed in the backyard of their Duxbury home after she jumped out of a second-floor window as part of a botched suicide bid.
A 911 call played aloud in the courtroom captured the dad’s screams as he discovered his children unresponsive with exercise bands around their necks in the basement.
Following his testimony, Patrick Clancy appeared to remain some 200 miles away from the Plymouth County trial — and was pictured around New York City, where he lives with his new wife, infertility specialist Rachel Danis.
